Frightful & Fabulous
You may have noticed, or maybe not, that this site isn’t what you’d expect when looking for horror. If you’re thinking, “Hey, this site looks too pretty to be horror, where are the skulls and extra black background with everything written in Times New Roman?” Firstly, oh my god, thank you for noticing.
Secondly, horror isn’t all blood, screams, and running up the stairs rather than going out the backdoor only to be “surprised” when the killer finds you. Instead of playing into the cliché, I wanted to show that horror can be frightful and fabulous; I’ll give some examples.
She may be terrifying, but her lipstick is on point.
Insidious Chapter 2
I love the Mother character in this film. She’s channeling some serious pageant mom vibes, which is scary in itself having seen some episodes of Dance Moms, but to combine it with the paranormal and some dramatic reds, then you got yourself a gorgeous frightful specter.
Velvet Buzzsaw
This movie did have some creepy supernatural elements that qualify as horror, but I thought it was nicer to look at than have me sweat through my jeans. Full disclosure, you cannot go wrong with having Toni Collette in a horror movie, you need to see it; from Sixth Sense to Hereditary, she is just fabulous.
A well curated artful attack on the senses… Too much?
Crimson Peak
Guillermo del Toro is an artist when it comes to blending horror with fantasy, and I would be doing a disservice to not mention one of my favorites of his. The costume and symbolism were absolutely stunning.
The contrasts flitter about like a moth to a flame.
A beautiful Wes Anderson nightmare.
Midsommar
My brother describes it as “the worst breakup ever” yet you can’t help but appreciate the vibrant colors even as you start tumbling into madness.
Neon Demon
Not my favorite horror film, but I absolutely dig the neon palette throughout. For a movie focused on the fashion industry, I expected some more costume flare, but alas, I was left wanting.
I like the look, but not the content, does that make sense?
The Shining
When cut off from society (2020 prelude) set within a beautiful yet ghost-filled hotel, the psychological trauma makes Jack, and this movie, anything but dull. The bathtub scene was pretty sensual right up until you were brutally catfished.
Babe turn beast aside, this bathroom is pretty deco chic.
Believe it or not, the list DOES go on. My hope is that next time you throw on a horror flick, you might find yourself saying “ya know, besides all that blood, I really love that outfit with the cuts.”
