Looking for a Horribly Good Time?
If you’re not into the horror to be scared, but rather to have a laugh with a skosh of creep then the list I’ve compiled here are some of my favorites. These aren’t including the campy movies, ones meant to be bad that it’s funny; that’s a work in progress. This is not in any kind of order, so scroll and choose at will, and I hope you have horribly good time!
“The Addams Family (duh)
If you haven’t caught on yet… I’m a fan of the Addams Family, so it only makes sense to list it here. The only Addams Family movies that I recommend are those with Anjelica Huston; The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.”
“Beetlejuice
One of my fondest memories as a child is watching Beetlejuice, both the movie and the cartoon. Of course, as a child, some of the context kind of goes over your head; I didn’t understand what a whore house was, nor did I see an issue with a dead dude centuries years old wanting to marry a child. >”
“Mayhem
Imagine this, rather than sending a passive-aggressive email to your colleagues, you stapled it to their heads instead. This melds Office Space with The Purge, and I think any cubicle gremlin will appreciate it. ”
“What We Do In The Shadows
Taika Waititi co-wrote, directed, and acted in this film with Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords anyone?). The vampires are dangerously delicious, and it’s my favorite Horrormedy (Comedy Horror) that I’ve seen so far.”
“Shaun of the Dead
What if your city was overrun with zombies, would you even notice? ”
“Life After Beth
You loved her in Parks and Recreation, and you’ll love undead Audrey Plaza. As a surprise to no one, the sarcasm can survive even death.”
“Death Becomes Her
Meryl Streep should live forever, the end.”
“Hocus Pocus
Halloween is not complete without watching Hocus Pocus. Grab your black flame candle and prepare thyself for a wicked good time. Keep an eye for the new Hocus Pocus 2 coming out at the end of September. ”
“The Babysitter
When I watched this film, I couldn’t help but think of Adventures in Babysitting, right down to the witty blonde baddie (Elisabeth Shue), however, Ms. Shue is unlikely to make a deal with the Devil. ”
“The Frighteners
I’m just a sucker for Michael J. Fox and 90s nostalgia.”
“Little Evil
Another Parks and Recreation alum, Adam Scott is the best stepdad any little evil spawn could ever pray for...But who is he praying to?”
“Zombieland
Not only does this movie provide guidance for an impending zombie apocalypse, but it’s just fun to watch Woody Harrelson go crazy in search of twinkies.”
“Ready Or Not
Rounding out the last Samara Weaving feature is a new spin on one of the best childhood games. I sincerely believe that Samara’s scream is verging on iconic and she should be included as an official Scream Queen.”
“Tucker and Dale Vs Evil
I enjoyed how this movie takes the Bumpkin horror trope and flips it on its head.”
“Dark Shadows
Getting my creepy fascination from my mother, she was a fan of the 1960s Dark Shadow series and I am a fan of seeing Johnny Depp as a dandy vampire.”
“Housebound
A lot of good humor coming out of New Zealand, and Housebound is no exception. On top of the wit, there are actually some really good high adrenaline scenes.”
“The Cabin in the Woods
Imagine all the tropes in one cabin with a Monsters R’Us below. A Joss Whedon (dickhead) meta-movie that is a cult favorite and it’s not a surprise as to why. ”
“Ghostkillers Vs Bloody Mary (Portuguese)
Unfortunately, I do not know Portuguese so apart from having to read the subtitles which is hardly an inconvenience, I really enjoyed this movie. It has ghosts, occult, gore, and punchlines at all the right times.”
“Deadtectives
A Shudder production infusing humor into paranormal investigation. It amps up the scares, but there are plenty of laughs to have in-between. ”
“Happy Death Day
Groundhog Day, but with murder! The only negative is that it didn’t have a Bill Murray cameo.”
